"In America they call it channelling. The process by which you let voices other than your own through. I had somebody coming to the house who I didn't know very well, and she was going around the pictures with me. She asked: 'how do you make these paintings?' I described to her the process of having a canvas and starting to make some marks and seeing if I like the marks and some marks becoming other marks and having an appetite for colour. And she said: 'oh, you mean you channel them.' And I said ..."
